In a job description, can I mention that I specifically want to hire BIPOC individuals?

Restaurants should reflect the communities in which they operate. But how do you ensure that everyone in your community would feel included while working at your business, and therefore interested in applying?

In this episode of Hire Education we asked employment lawyer Christopher Achkar if a job description can specifically state that the employer wants to hire from a marginalized community, or that hiring a BIPOC candidate (for example) would be preferred for the role.

You must be committed to diversity and inclusion if you state in your job description that BIPOC, LGBTQ2IA+, or any other minority groups are encouraged to apply. Only include this in your job description if you intend to follow through and build a diverse workforce.

It’s important to consider your own unconscious biases and examine your workplace culture before you hire. To start building a diverse workforce, consider things like the diversity of your leadership team, if your appearance policy may be discriminatory, and the accessibility of your space.
